Alsace – France’s new toll area, EUROBOX 4G only

Date: 03.11.2026, Author: TollPass

From 1 January 2027, France will introduce tolling for heavy goods vehicles over 3.5 t in Alsace, a region in north-eastern France that will operate as a separate toll area. The tolled network covers the main north–south routes and the roads leading to the German border, around 200 km in total.

How will tolling in Alsace work?

Alsace will be France’s first toll area to use satellite-based (GNSS) tolling. It is a free-flow system with no barriers and no need to stop, similar to the toll systems in Bulgaria, Germany, Belgium, Slovakia, Hungary, Switzerland, Poland and the Czech Republic.

IMPORTANT: In the new toll area, tolls can only be paid with the TollPass EUROBOX 4G on-board unit*.

* Mobile network operators in France are switching off their 2G networks by the end of 2026. An on-board unit with 4G connectivity is therefore required to pay tolls in Alsace.

Tolled sections

  • A35 and A36 – previously toll-free sections outside the Strasbourg metropolitan area;
  • RD83 – between Colmar and Sélestat;
  • selected sections of the RD1363, RD502 and RD504.

How is the toll calculated?

Announced rates range from €0.071 to €0.345 per km. The toll depends on three factors: the distance travelled on tolled roads, the gross combination weight of the vehicle (including trailer), and its Euro emission class.

Is there a discount?

Yes. With TollPass EUROBOX 4G, you get a 13% discount on the infrastructure charge for every truck that makes more than 20 trips a month on the tolled roads in Alsace.

What do you need to do?

If you plan to travel through Alsace after 1 January 2027 and currently use a TollPass EUROBOX, please plan to replace it with a TollPass EUROBOX 4G. This will allow you to keep paying tolls in the new Alsace toll area.
